In addition to mingling in our custom-made virtual ballroom before and after the formal program, attendees will hear inspiring remarks from all the honorees, including the 2020 Fourth Estate Award honoree Susan Zirinsky. Zirinsky became CBS News president and senior executive producer of CBS News in 2019, after a decades-long career covering a range of historic stories. Zirinsky will accept the evening’s highest honor, the Fourth Estate Award, recognizing her significant contributions to the field of journalism.

The evening also will honor:

  • Maria Ressa, a fearless journalist convicted in the Philippines on trumped-up charges of cyber libel, with the 2020 international John Aubuchon Press Freedom Award

  • Linda Tirado, an author and freelance photographer who was badly injured while covering the Minneapolis protests after George Floyd’s death, with the 2020 domestic John Aubuchon Press Freedom Award; and

  • Ed Yong, the staff writer at The Atlantic who has been shaping our collective understanding of the coronavirus and its impact, with the 2020 Neil and Susan Sheehan award for investigative journalism.

The gala, attended by hundreds of members, guests, and media luminaries, raises the majority of the operating expenses for the Club’s nonprofit affiliate, the National Press Club Journalism Institute. Tickets are tax-deductible, and you can make an additional gift here.

Guests also have the unique opportunity to watch New Yorker artist Liza Donnelly share a live drawing of a custom illustration made just for the 2020 Fourth Estate Award Gala. Donnelly has graciously agreed to print and autograph a copy of the illustration for anyone who donates $100 or more during the evening’s festivities.

Gala attendees in the Washington, DC, metro area can pre-order their favorite National Press Club food and beverages for pickup or delivery that day.
