This week In National Press Club history

Dec. 15, 1921: President Warren G. Harding, the only U.S. president to be qualified to join the Club in what is now the Journalist category, casts his vote in the 13th election of officers. While in the White House, Harding, a former publisher of the Marion (Ohio) Star, voted in other Club elections, attended Club events, and played poker with reporters on at least one occasion. While other U.S. presidents have received membership cards, they are not voting members of the Club.

Last week, the National Press Club held its 105th election of officers.

This Week In National Press Club History is brought to you by the History and Heritage Committee, which preserves and revitalizes the Club’s history through lobby displays, events, panel discussions and interviews with notable Club members and personnel. It is compiled by Elizabeth Smith Brownstein with material from the Club’s archives, Reliable Sources: 100 Years of National Press Club History, and former Club President Art Wiese.
