This week's virtual Books & Brunch examines 'Washington Black' on Aug. 21

The next Books & Brunch will discuss Washington Black by Esi Edugyan. The Zoom session begins at noon on Saturday, Aug. 21.

To RSVP and receive a link, please email Fay Iudicello at [email protected] by Thursday, Aug. 19. Those who RSVP should expect to receive the invitation at 9 a.m. on Aug. 21.

Washington Black, named one of the 10 best books of the year by The New York Times, is a coming-of-age tale that begins with Wash, an 11-year-old slave on a Barbados plantation, taught to read by the slave master's brother, Christopher, a naturalist, explorer, inventor, and abolitionist. When a man is killed and Wash is blamed, they flee to America.

For readers who like to plan ahead, the group will read American Republics by Pulitzer Prize-winning historian Alan Taylor at its Sept. 18 gathering.

Books & Brunch is open to all members and their guests.
